According to data from Challenger, Gray, and Christmas, the technology industry in the United States has laid off more than one-third of the total announced layoffs since 2026, with Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft laying off nearly 50000 employees. Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft are expected to invest $725 billion in AI infrastructure this year. Oracle lost 21000 employees throughout the year and its credit rating was downgraded by S&P this month; Microsoft will lay off 4800 positions this month, involving a $7.5 million acquisition of Activision Blizzard's reset. Enrico Moretti, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, pointed out that AI related layoffs are an excuse for management to correct excessive recruitment. Amazon and Microsoft have stated that promoting AI technology is not a decisive factor in layoffs, and AI native startups such as Anthropic and OpenAI are still expanding their workforce.
